Head Of Department

South Gujarat and especially Surat has seen rapid industrial growth in past few decades. Besides this, many industrial zones viz., GIDC, SEZ, ZSI surrounded by city Ankleshwar, Bharuch, Dahej, Valsad, Vapi, Daman have also seen rapid development a part of opportunities in forest and wild-life study by wide forest zone of bharuch, dang, navsari, Saputara. However, this industrial growth has also raised concerns regarding its impact on environment. Thus, there are many job opportunities in the sectors of pollution control, environmental testing and environmental consultancies. First time in the region of South Gujarat a graduate degree course is being started in response to this demand.
B.Sc. in Environmental Science is an undergraduate degree course is typically for three years in the stream of Environmental Science. Subjects usually studied under this are Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology, Soil science, Geology, and Geography. The duration for this course is 3 years. There are many career options in the field of environmental science. The job opportunities in this particular area in the private and government organizations as well as industries are increasing due to the growing industrialization and realization to check the pollution levels. The global organizations engaged in pollution control and sustainable growth is offering attractive compensation to the fresh graduates.
Professionals in this career can also opt for teaching jobs in universities and colleges. Environmental scientists are engaged in research activities in private and public sector institutions. Many graduates are employed in media sector as environmental journalists.

Environmental Science curriculum provides students with opportunities to gain extensive hands-on experience with these scientific tools and facilities through lab-based coursework and research projects. A wide variety of scientific equipment is used to analyse environmental samples.

Our laboratories are equipped with high-quality, state-of-art experimental facilities enabling research at the forefront of science and technology. The department maintains fully-calibrated instruments, like CoD digesters, binocular microscopes, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, High volume samplers etc. which are available to students along with training and troubleshooting support. Facilities provide standard equipments and expertise, which support in-house (intramural) research activities at the institute.

Department also uses four other laboratories for following subjects on sharing basis with various departments of the same institute.

  • Ecoinformatics and Ecological Modelling (To study ecological data generation and analysis)
  • Image analysis, GPS and qGIS (To study frontier aspects of RS and GIS technology)
  • Microbiology (To develop essential skills for applied microbiology)
  • Physics (To study energy balance aspects of various energy resources)
  • Botany and Zoology (To develop essential skills for applied botany and zoology)

The Department has an active research program in various subdomains of Environment Science. Faculties have taken up various intramural and students’ dissertation projects in Environmental
Science. Two faculties of department are actively supervising research students for M.Phil. and Ph. D. degree. Faculties and students are encouraged to participate and present their work in workshops, seminars and conferences at regular basis. Faculties are also involved in consultancy project and part of GPCB/CPCB audit team. College has subscribed for good quality international research journals and is the member of INFLIBINET scheme for availing online research articles.
